How to install a digitizer for use with AutoCAD. Installing a digitizer for use in AutoCAD is different when compared to earlier releases of the software. AutoCAD 2000 and later support Wintab-compatible digitizers; they do not support digitizers that require ADI drivers. 

Note: Digitizers that worked with earlier releases of the Autodesk software using ADI drivers can only work with the current software if a Wintab driver is available.

Solution:

To install a digitizer for use with AutoCAD:

1. Obtain the latest Wintab drivers for the digitizer. Wintab drivers should be available from the hardware vendor or from the manufacturer's website.
2. Connect the digitizer to the serial port.
3. Turn on the digitizer.
4. Run Setup for the Wintab driver and follow the installation instructions.
5. Restart the computer. Depending on the Wintab driver used, modify the digitizer parameters, such as number of buttons, port settings, motion speed, and so on, in one or more of the following locations:
   • During Wintab setup.
   • In Windows Control Panel (Wintab setup creates a program item for Wintab settings).
   • In a new folder created by Wintab setup (This folder may also contain Help files).
6. Start the AutoCAD and on the Tools menu, click Options.
7. In the Options window, select the System tab, and select Wintab Compatible Digitizer ADI 4.2 - by Autodesk from the Current Pointing Device drop-down menu.
8. Select one of the following options for Accept Input From:
   • Digitizer only. Input is accepted from the digitizer only and ignores mouse input.
   • Digitizer and mouse. Input is accepted from both digitizer and mouse.
9. Click OK to close the Options window.

The digitizer can now be configured and calibrated.
